Southern Fleurieu

There’s a stretch of land jutting out into the Great Australian Bite, from Sellicks Beach just south of McLaren Vale round to Victor Harbor and the Currency Creek wine region.

If you’re standing on one of the beautiful blustering headlands looking out over the great blue southern ocean, you can see Kangaroo Island in the distance. You’ll probably spot a whale or two if the timing is right.

This is the land of the great white shark, so careful surfing, but if you’ve got a big boat, you can catch snapper as big as your leg, or reel in a couple of delectable King George Whiting.

A tourism hotspot, the Fleurieu Peninsula is the kind of place you can spend your day fishing, diving, swimming, surfing (just watch for sharks :) and then wind up the afternoon sitting on the porch outside cellar door at one of the local wineries or award-winning restaurants, eating and drinking as the sun goes down.

Another pure Mediterranean climate, the Southern Fleurieu region is home to some great Riesling, Viognier, herbaceous, tobacco-flavoured Cab Sav and sweet-berry Shiraz.

Lady Bay Vineyard is absolutely spectacular, with vines over-looking a world-class golf course and the ocean, there’s five-star producer Madeleine’s Wines, Minko, Brian Croser’s Tapanappa Fleurieu Pinot and a host of charming small producers and cellar doors dotted along the coast.

In fact, Brian Croser is tipping the region to grow into one of SA’s premium Pinot regions.

I could happily live off Riesling, Snapper and Pinot, so count me in!
